News: Twenty years in dance

Martha Graham, Balanchine and New York City Ballet, Trisha Brown and Mark Morris are some of choreographer Richard Alston’s standout highlights of the last 20 years – Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake, Pina Bausch, Natalia Osipova and Alina Cojocaru feature in Judith Mackrell’s list. Both acknowledge the importance of new – and refurbished – spaces for dance. Looking back 40 years, how would Alston feel about starting out today?

I may be remembering those far-off days with an unrealistic nostalgia, but my strongest impression is that even if there was less money, there was definitely a much greater sense of possibility, of a future for young artists (and indeed all young people).
