The Car Man was an instant hit when it premiered in 2000, winning the Evening Standard Award for Musical Event of the year among other accolades, yet this is only its second return. With plot elements including murder and allusions to rape, it’s not hard to see why it hasn’t found a regular place in the family-friendly Christmas season. But New Adventures Director and Choreographer Matthew Bourne is passionate about the production, and is currently working to achieve the intense performances he feels it deserves with his new cast.

“We work fast and they’re not told every little thing; they need to be inventive and they need to keep their brains alive,” he says. “And I look for passionate people, passionate about movement and performing, wanting to give to an audience – that’s so much what we’re about. The technique is important, but if that’s all they have, it’s not enough.”
