Company Decalage at International Dance Festival Birmingham

Although Birmingham’s International Dance Festival is well underway there are still plenty of dance based reasons for getting on a train to the Midlands this month.

This week has already seen the premiere of a new work by rising star of South Asian Dance, Aakash Odedra – and at the weekend (9 & 10 May) locally based choreographer Mickael ‘Marso’ Riviere’s Company Decalage [pictured] presents a new double bill featuring Lebanese choreographer, actor and dancer Guy Nader and Egyptian performer/choreographer Salah El Brogy.

“We are thrilled to premiere so much new work in IDFB 2014,” says David Massingham (Artistic Director of DanceXchange and Co-Artistic Director of IDFB),“as well as featuring the work of both hugely established names, such as Sylvie Guillem and Matthew Bourne”. Guillem was in town with 6,000 miles away earlier this week – New Adventures new production of Lord of the Flies is part of the festival next week (14 – 17 May).

Still to come in the festival programme are Protein Dance with Border Tales (13 – 17 May), Candoco Dance Company with Javier De Frutos’ Studies for C (24 May), Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s tango based show Milonga (23 & 24 May) and the Breakin’ Convention tour (20 & 21 May).

There are also plenty of free street performances (look out for the new IDFB prodcution B Town , 21 – 24 May ) and opportunities to take part – with a series of Paint the Town Red events, culminating in a Brazilian carnival and club night on the last weekend (23 – 25 May).
