News: Genee Dance Challenge winners announced

Twenty three heat winners from the UK, Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg gathered at the Royal Ballet of Flanders in Antwerp for the Final of the Genée Dance Challenge recently. The finalists danced for the Royal Academy of Dance President Darcey Bussell in the hope of being chosen to perform, non-competitively, at the Genée International Ballet Competition Semi-Finals next week, (25 September) . The winners are Tara Morris, UK (Level 1); Alexandra Oliff, UK (Level 2); Lita Garcia, UK (Level 3) and Mathias Van Geyt, Belgium (Level 4). As part of the performance, Darcey Bussell’s also took part in a half hour ‘in conversation’ session, talking about her career with RAD Chief Executive Luke Rittner

The Genée Dance Challenge is a competition opportunity for students up to the age of 19 who are studying with an RAD Registered Teacher. All net proceeds from the Genée Dance Challenge, after income and expenditure including any scholarships, awards and bursaries, go towards the Challengenée Fund which provides funding for the annual Genée International Ballet Competition.

Darius James, Ballet Cymru Artistic Director, said: “The Royal Academy of Dance’s Genée International Ballet Competition, held in Antwerp in September this year, is a fantastic platform for pre-professional dancers looking for a career in ballet to showcase their talent. The Genée Dance Challenge is a wonderful opportunity for young dancers to take part in events leading up to these awards.”

The competition starts today (18 September), with semi finals on 24 & 25 September and the Finals on 27 September.
