Contemporary dance meets medieval music in Sasha Waltz and Guests’ D’Avant – at Southbank Centre for two nights this week.

Famous for his collaborations with Akram Khan, the monks of the Shaolin Temple, artist Antony Gormley and film director Joe Wright (to name just a few) choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui is dancing, with former partner Damien Jalet, along side another dancing couple Luc Dunberry and Juan Kruz Díaz de Garaio Esnaola.

The work was first created in 2001 and every few years the group have come together to perform it again – although this is the first time its been seen in the UK.

“We fall back on specific patterns…It’s like time didn’t pass – which is ironic because the piece is called D’Avant, From Before, and we keep going back to this place.” Cherkaoui tells Lyndsey Winship.
