Dance Umbrella has announced its programme for this year – the first under new Artistic Director Emma Gladstone (formerly of Sadler’s Wells, Crying Out Loud, The Place, amongst others – and one time dancer with Matthew Bourne’s Adventures in Motion Pictures and Lea Anderson’s The Cholmondeleys). This year’s festival will be taking place at fourteen venues across London from Tuesday 14 to Thursday 30 October and includes ice skating at Alexandra Palace (from French Canadian collective Le Patin Libre), a new show from contemporary flamenco star Rocio Molina (the Barbican), a new show by London based hip hop artist Ivan Blackstock (a joint commission with the Young Vic) and Dance Umbrella’s first ever show for babies.

Presenting (and producing) work for young audiences has long been one of Emma Gladstone’s strengths and international work for children and young people will now feature prominently in Dance Umbrella. Other new strands include a four year commitment to touring to outer London arts centres and Body Politic – a series of discussions and debates. There will also be year-round creative digital projects and in depth online features – starting with Sanjoy Roy’s feature on ice skating and dance – and Moving London Hundreds – a photographic project which invites everyone to submit their photos capturing naturally occurring choreography in London.
