French Canadian choreographer Marie Chouinard will be back in London with her company in June at Sadler’s Wells, but meanwhile there’s an unsual opportunity to see her work this weekend at The Peacock – in Triptyque, a triple bill of work by choreographers for circus group The 7 Fingers. In advance of a longer interview about her programme at Sadler’s Wells, we asked her about working with the contemporary circus trailblazers…

This is the first time The 7 Fingers have joined forces with guest choreographers for the creation of a new show. How did the collaboration come about?
Director Samuel Tétreault invited me to create a duet for himself and Anne Plamondon, a superb dancer who is not part of Les 7 doigts de la main. Samuel, an equilibrist artist, wanted to experience the stage as a dancer. I gave him the chance to do it, through this duet, as I also directed him, coached him in the depth and resonance of the world of dance performance.

Was it inspiring to work with a circus company?
In this particular situation, I worked with “two dancers”, one having a vast and profound experience, and another new to the field.

In Anne & Samuel the two protagonists perform on medical crutches, elaborating on movement research started by you in bODY_rEMIX. What made you want to continue working in this way?
I felt I could explore further with those crutches, which I approach as extensions of the body. Here the human body is reconfigured with a totally new architecture and I am always curious to see the unfolding of limitless possibilities, of an embodied mathematical process.

We’re looking forward to seeing Compagnie Marie Chouinard back at Sadler’s Wells in June. What else are you working on at the moment?
I am working on a new creation for the Martha Graham Dance Company, premiering on 14 April in New York, and on a new choreography for my own company based on the artist Hieronymus Bosch. It will premiere in August 2016 in the Netherlands.
